Indigenous Literature Kit

The Indigenous Literature Kit: Growing Our Collective Understanding of Truth and Reconciliation is a collaborative professional learning project developed by Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools and the St. Albert-Sturgeon Regional Collaborative Service Delivery region, and supported by the Edmonton Regional Learning Consortium. This kit is a professional learning resource that supports educators to grow in their collective understanding of Truth and Reconciliation. The project started with titles from the Literacy Seed Kit and added new titles that advance First Nations, Métis and Inuit foundational knowledge.

Using this Resource

Each title in the Literature Kit is aligned with terms and concepts from the Draft First Nations, Métis and Inuit Foundational Knowledge, Terms and Concepts curriculum and provides ideas and suggestions for exploring these terms and concepts. Each title notes sensitivities in the text, themes and reading complexity as well as specific grade level teaching suggestions. Click to access a Sample Book Annotation.

Four learning progressions are used to organize titles for each grade level division:

  • Initiating: I define and explain key terms and concepts.
  • Developing: I make connections with key terms and concepts to my life, other texts and/or to the world.
  • Consolidating: I explain and analyze terms and concepts based on my knowledge of varied connected texts.
  • Mastering: I teach others about the terms and concepts using creative representations of ideas (e.g., analogies, metaphors).
